James Taylor made a memorable debut for Kent by claiming six wickets, bowling out Gloucestershire for 325 on the opening day of their County Championship Division Two clash in Bristol. The 25-year-old seamer, on a two-match loan from Surrey, recorded career-best figures of 6-52 from 23.1 overs, capitalizing on a host collapse from a promising 287-4. Ben Charlesworth was the standout batsman with 85 off 148 balls, including 13 fours, after Kent won the toss and opted to field.

James Bracey contributed 57, Ollie Price added 50, and 21-year-old Tommy Boorman struck a career-best 49 in his third first-class appearance. Keith Dudgeon deserved better than his 2-63. In the two overs before stumps, Kent reached 1-0 without loss.

Gloucestershire’s innings began with Cameron Bancroft edging an edged four over slips off the second ball from Dudgeon. It set the tone as Kent’s seamers bowled with little fortune early on. Bancroft survived a confident lbw appeal on four and had only reached 12 when he edged Taylor to first slip, where Zak Crawley took a low two-handed catch.

Charlesworth, on 20, edged Michael Cohen through the slips for four before playing and missing twice in the same over. The left-hander grew in confidence, reaching 46 not out at lunch, with the score at 96-1 and Price providing solid support in a half-century stand off 82 balls.

The partnership blossomed to 170 deliveries in the afternoon session. Charlesworth was first to his fifty, hitting eight fours, and Price soon followed with nine boundaries. However, Price edged a back-foot forcing shot from Taylor to Dudgeon at third slip, ending the stand at 144-2.

Gloucestershire advanced to 172 before Miles Hammond fell lbw to Dudgeon for 12—the wicket the seamer deserved on the last ball of the 52nd over. The next delivery saw Charlesworth bowled off an inside edge by Joey Evison while driving at a wide ball. Tea was taken at 215-4, with Bracey joined by Boorman.

Both batsmen played positively, bringing up a half-century partnership off 87 balls. Taylor twice beat Boorman’s outside edge in the 69th over as the pitch offered seam movement. A brief shower interrupted play at 240, but action resumed at 17:25 BST without any overs lost.

Bracey produced the most assured batting of the day, reaching a fluent 78-ball fifty with eight fours. Boorman took more risks but struck some sweet boundaries, taking the partnership to 100 off 140 deliveries. Surprise came when Bracey departed lbw driving across the line to Evison for 287-5, with the second new ball just two overs away.

The new ball was taken at 301-5. The luckless Dudgeon had a confident appeal against Graeme van Buuren for a catch behind rejected. The former Gloucestershire captain struggled for runs this season but was positive from the start. He moved to 21 before edging Taylor to third slip, making it 309-6. Boorman soon followed, caught behind driving at Dudgeon for 99 balls and eight fours.

Matt Taylor became his namesake’s fourth victim, lbw, and Will Williams was caught and bowled off the next ball, the ball popping off an inside edge onto his pad. James Taylor completed a memorable day by bowling Ed Middleton, leaving Gloucestershire to rue losing their last five wickets for 16 runs.
