As the J.League season kicked off in February, the team has been adapting to the German tactician’s philosophy. Four months into the regime, veteran defender Shiotani Tsukasa reflects on the squad’s progress.
“There are noticeably fewer moments of hesitation on the pitch,” Shiotani says, pointing to the growing understanding among players of Gaule’s tactical demands. Under Gaule, the team has developed a clearer attacking structure and more coordinated pressing, reducing the uncertainty that plagued early-season performances. Shiotani, 37, and the 39-year-old Gaule—just two years apart—share a close professional relationship. “He’s a young coach with fresh ideas, but he listens to the players. That mutual trust is key,” Shiotani adds.
The defender highlights how Gaule’s clear instructions and game-by-game adjustments have accelerated the team’s adaptation. “We’re no longer second-guessing our movements. Everyone knows their role, and that chemistry is becoming instinctive.” With the new system taking shape, Sanfrecce Hiroshima aims to build on its early-season momentum and compete strongly in the J1 League.
