British track cycling star Katie Archibald, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, has announced her retirement from professional cycling at the age of 32. The news was confirmed by the British Cycling Federation.
“After 13 years competing on the international stage and a lifetime of racing alongside my older brother, I have decided to step away from the sport,” Archibald said in a statement. “I am grateful for all I have learned, the places I have seen, and the incredible people I have met. I am confident that I will continue to learn, explore, and meet amazing people.”
Following her cycling career, Archibald plans to pursue a career as a nurse.
Archibald’s impressive resume includes seven world championship gold medals and 21 European championship titles. Her most notable achievements include winning gold in the team pursuit at the 2016 Rio Olympics and another gold in the omnium at the Tokyo Olympics.
Her older brother, John Archibald, is also a professional track cyclist. He won a silver medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and has twice been crowned British national champion in the individual pursuit (2019 and 2020).
