Rookie Ryan Waldschmidt collected two hits and three RBIs in just his second major league start, while Eduardo Rodriguez held the New York Mets hitless until the sixth inning, guiding the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-1 win in the rubber match of a three-game series on Sunday in Phoenix.

Waldschmidt delivered a two-run double in the second inning and added an RBI single during a three-run sixth, which was capped by Ketel Marte’s two-run triple. The victory marked the Diamondbacks’ first series win in their last six attempts.

Rodriguez (4-0) allowed one run and four hits over 8 1/3 innings, falling two outs shy of his first career complete game after Mark Vientos singled with one out in the ninth. He struck out four and walked three. Arizona has not recorded a complete game since Zac Gallen shut out the Chicago Cubs 1-0 on Sept. 8, 2023.

New York managed its first hit when Carson Benge looped a single to center with one out in the sixth. Luis Torrens followed with a double, driving in the Mets’ only run. Torrens had two hits for New York, which totaled 12 hits in the series and dropped to 15-25. The Mets had won four of six coming in and were seeking a third straight series victory on the final stop of a nine-game road trip.

Rodriguez has surrendered just one run and six hits over his last two starts. He gave up two hits in seven innings during a 9-0 win over Pittsburgh on Tuesday. He retired the first nine batters on 27 pitches before walking Juan Soto to open the fourth. Austin Slater grounded into a double play to end the inning. Rodriguez breezed through a six-pitch fifth before Benge broke up the no-hit bid.

Mets opener Huascar Brazoban (2-1) walked Ildemaro Vargas and Nolan Arenado to begin the second. Tobias Myers entered and got two outs before Waldschmidt doubled to deep left-center, scoring both runners.

Third baseman Andy Ibanez’s second throwing error of the game set up Arizona’s three-run sixth against bulk reliever David Peterson. Jorge Barrosa singled with two outs, bringing Waldschmidt to the plate, and Marte lined a triple off the right-field fence to plate the final two runs. Peterson gave up four hits and three runs (none earned) in five innings, striking out three without a walk.
