Florentino Pérez Names and Blames Several Spanish Media in Tense Press Conference

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez launched a fierce attack on multiple media outlets and journalists during a press conference, accusing them of a daily campaign to tarnish the club’s image. He singled out ABC, Juanma Castaño, Segurola, Cáñizares, Relaño, and Relevo, among others, for their coverage.

“I want to put an end to this anti-Real Madrid sentiment. They are trying to destroy this club, and I must protect our members,” Pérez stated. “Some people want to take control of Real Madrid, but they won’t succeed. I’ve been here for 26 years, and we have built the greatest club in the world.”

During the event, Pérez appeared more aggressive and visibly frustrated than usual. He directly called out specific journalists and media groups, at times losing control of the room. He first criticized ABC, repeatedly referencing the newspaper, though his ire extended further.

“ABC belongs to the Vocento group. They launched Relevo, and we all know how that works. They partnered with La Liga to create a digital outlet that lost €25 million. When La Liga stopped funding them, they turned to Telefónica and Telecinco. Their only goal is to attack Real Madrid and me,” he claimed.

Pérez also said, “It’s a shame. My father used to read ABC, and he even subscribed for me years ago. But I’ve decided to cancel my subscription tomorrow. It’s a tribute to my father—I believe he would thank me. You attack Real Madrid every single day. Look at the two articles they published today. One was written by a woman—I doubt she knows anything about football.”

In response, journalist José Ramón de la Morena, known as Cáñizares, defended himself: “I’m doing my job as a journalist. I haven’t attacked you. You’re attacking my work now.”

Pérez then continued: “ABC says I told the board I was tired before the meeting. Thank you very much! I don’t even know the person who wrote that article, and I doubt it was signed by him. How can you write something like that? Is David Sánchez de Castro here? I’d like to meet him and say hello. They publish nonsense without any basis. I wake up early and go to bed last. I work like an animal every day.”

The Real Madrid president added: “We have to fight many people, really many. If you’re from COPE, please tell Juanma Castaño to show some respect for the best club in history. He speaks about us every hour, every day.”

Referring to Onda Cero, Pérez said: “Onda Cero? Go talk to Segurola. Every outlet has one of them.”

He then took aim at other journalists: “I see what these people do—Segurola, Relaño—as if they invented football. We call them ‘system intellectuals.’”

The press conference revealed a deep rift between the Real Madrid leadership and the Spanish sports media, with Pérez vowing to protect the club from what he described as a coordinated attack. {IMAGE_1}
